CATCOS Aerosol Measurements

P1030440.JPG

CATCOS (Capacity Building and Twinning for Climate Observing Systems) is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) with MeteoSwiss (project page) as the coordinating partner.

Geographical extent of the project intervention.

In the context of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and WMO Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW), the project addresses the need to improve climate observations world-wide, but particularly in developing countries and countries in transition.

Instrumental setup at Bukit Kototabang, Indonesia

The role of our laboratory is to implement aerosol measurements (aerosol light scattering and absorption at various wavelengths) at the different sites while Empa is responsible for measurement of greenhouse gases. The University of Zürich and the University of Fribourg focus on glacier monitoring.
Why aerosol light scattering and absorption measurements?

  • September 7, 2012: Start of routine measurements in Bukit Kototabang, Indonesia, after successful implementation
  • April 30, 2013: Start of routine measurements in El Tololo, Chile, after successful implementation
  • February 28, 2014: Start of routine measurements in Pha Din, Viet Nam, after successful implementation
  • March 2, 2015: Start of routine measurements at Mount Kenya, Kenya, after successful implementation
