Energy Economics Group
The Energy Economics Group (EEG) at the Paul Scherrer Institute is an interdisciplinary research team specializing in comprehensive analysis of energy systems, markets, and socio-economic factors to support the transition to sustainable energy systems. As part of PSI’s Laboratory for Energy Systems Analysis, EEG’s mission is to advance understanding of energy technology evolution and inform robust policy strategies at national and global scales. Utilizing state-of-the-art energy system optimization and integrated assessment models, the group specializes in developing detailed scenarios that provide a means to explore how energy infrastructure, markets, and consumer behaviors evolve under various strategies and future multi-dimensional uncertainty (technological, geopolitical, societal).
EEG’s rigorous integrated approach combines high technological and engineering detail with economic and behavioral insights, enabling the evaluation of how energy production, infrastructure and end-use co-evolve in the future. Its accessible analyses provide policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the scientific community with actionable insights essential for effective decarbonization and energy security planning.
Strategically positioned as a bridge between science, economics, and policy, EEG collaborates closely with national authorities, industry partners, and international bodies, including the Swiss Federal Offices, the European Commission, the OECD, the IEA (through its Technology Collaboration Programs) and the World Energy Council. This collaborative approach ensures research relevance and amplifies its impact on Swiss, European and Global Sustainability Objectives. By integrating technical expertise with real-world applicability, EEG is a critical resource for shaping long-term climate mitigation strategies, energy security, and sustainable development pathways.
