My vision is to advance the scientific understanding of climate and health effects of atmospheric aerosols, motivated by societal benefits of reduced prediction uncertainties and improved air quality. We address the broader goal to gain insights into the processes behind environmental impacts of anthropogenic aerosols primarily with experimental research. The laboratory and field studies, hence, focus on aerosol properties and processes that remain poorly quantified or hinder identification of effective mitigation pathways. One main element are continuous long-term observations performed at the high-altitude research station Jungfraujoch, which is embedded in the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization as well as in the Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS; a European Research Infrastructure Consortium). Acquired data sets serve, for example, as benchmark for global scale simulations of atmospheric aerosol. As part of ACTRIS implementation, we are leading the Swiss national consortium including the upgrade and integration of the Payerne observatory into the network. Another research goal is to bridge the gap between in situ measurements and remote sensing of aerosol properties, including the validation and improvement of numerical inversion algorithms used in ground-based and satellite remote sensing applications.
