Biography

Elizabeth Skoropata is a beamline scientist at the Furka enstation of the Athos beamline at SwissFEL. Her work is aimed at uncovering how the local electronic and magnetic environments of atomic species create the functional properties of nano-scale systems.

She obtained her Ph. D. in physics from the University of Manitoba in the Nanomagnetism group of Prof. Johan van Lierop. Her Ph. D. research was aimed at understanding the surface and interface magnetism of nanoparticles. Afterwards, she joined the Quantum Heterostructures group of Dr. Ho Nyung Lee at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where her primary focus was to create 3d-5d epitaxial oxide thin films to investigate the magnetotransport properties resulting from Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions at oxide interfaces.  In 2020, Elizabeth became a postdoc in the RESOXS team of the Microscopy and Magnetism group (led by Dr. Urs Staub) at the Swiss Light Source where she studied the static and dynamic properties of correlated oxide systems. In 2023, she joined the Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Matter group where she works currently as a beamline scientist at the Furka enstation of SwissFEL.
