Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles & Combined Function Magnets for Ultra Low-Emittance Rings
(UKRI, DLS, KYMA, DESY)
Two prototypes will be designed and built under this Task. The first is a Permanent Magnet (PM) based quadrupole with parameters suitable for the strong focusing quadrupoles to be used for the Diamond-II upgrade at DLS. The second is a PM-based combined function magnet with dipole and quadrupole fields, aimed towards the magnets used in the Diamond-II lattice. These are second-stage prototypes; the basic concept has already been demonstrated, and this work will consider the requirements for cost-effective series production of reliable magnets for an operational science facility.
The first part of the project is to assess the requirements for each of the magnets in terms of field, field quality, magnetic length, overall magnet dimensions, and tuning range. A magnetic design will be produced for each of the prototypes showing how the specifications will be met. This will include a decision of the type of field tuning to use, between mechanical (where the PMs are moved by a motor or set of motors), and electrical (where the field is adjusted using coils). Following the magnetic modelling, a full mechanical design will be produced. Parts will be procured, and the magnets will be assembled. Finally, the completed magnets will undergo a programme of magnetic measurements to ensure that the specifications are met.
