Swiss Competence Centers for Energy Research – Heat & Electricity storage (SCCER-HaE) - Phase 2
LEA’s research activities within the second phase of the SCCER HaE (Swiss Competence Center for Energy research – Heat and Electricity storage) focus on the assessment of energy storage technologies on both the technology and system levels. Technology evaluation includes economic and environmental aspects. The aim is to develop a better understanding of the boundary conditions under which energy storage technologies will be key components of the future Swiss energy system: depending on energy demand levels, intermittent electricity generation, penetration of electricity-based vehicles and fuels as well as goals for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the integration of Switzerland in the European electricity market, different types of energy storage technologies will be needed. Technologies in focus are a range of batteries, Advanced Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (AA-CAES), power-to-gas, and pumped storage hydropower. These activities are carried out in collaboration with numerous research partners, namely the Chair for Energy Efficiency at the university of Geneva, the Energy Politics Group at ETH Zurich, the Energy Storage research group at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the Professorship of Renewable Energy Carriers at ETH Zurich, and others.
