Beam transfer channels with low power consumption

Task 3.6

This task is led by GSI.
Contact: Peter SPILLER at GSI

The Problem: Conventional dipole and quadrupole magnets in transfer channels consume significant power, but in many applications the fields are needed only for short times and low duty factor.

a possibly solution is provided by pulsed quadrupoles

figure #1: concept of pulsed electromagnetic lenses

figure #2: field simulation using CST
pulsed electromagnetic lenses:
  • four conductors arrangement leading the high current pulse
  • epoxy resin for mechanical stability
  • laminated shielding of electromagnetic pulse
  • aperture radius 48 mm
  • 76 T/m and 400 kA peak current
  • pulse duration: 45µs
