Description of EIGER Sketch of the Instrument The neutrons first pass a sapphire filter, which absorbs neutrons with an energy above about 80meV. The adjustable virtual source reduces the background. The double focusing PG monochromator selects neutrons of the proper wavelength and focus the beam at the sample position. The monochromator shielding is built from non-magnetic materials so that high field cryo-magnets can be used with EIGER . The horizontally focusing analyser selects neutrons with a given energy and focus them onto the detector. The detector is a single 3He-tube.
