Towards Megawatt Scale Mobile Airborne Wind Energy (TT1000)

TwingTec has developed an intelligent way to unlock the full power of wind: Energy Drones. By accessing stronger winds at higher altitudes, they produce more energy while at using only 10% of the materials of a wind turbine, and are also ideally suited to decentralized on- and off-grid applications where mobility and low impact are key. In this project, the TT1000 product concept will be finalized and validated and the pre-design of a sub-scale commercial demonstrator completed. Life cycle assessment (LCA) performed by PSI will be embedded directly into the design process, making sure the environmental performance of the product is maximized. Specifically, the LCA is dedicated to the evaluation of the environmental performance of the TwingTec TT1000 product

concept from a life-cycle perspective taking into account its production, use, and end-of-life. An iterative approach in close collaboration with the design team will be pursued for the LCA throughout the project period, ensuring consistency between the technical design, the economic evaluation, and the LCA. Energy and material flows as well as potential emissions over the entire life cycle of the TT1000 will be quantified building upon information from the other project activities, whereas background life-cycle inventory data will be sourced from the ecoinvent database.
