The EPFL-PSI professorship in Solid Waste Treatment consists of two units, one at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and one at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The Chemical Processes and Materials research group (CPM) at PSI is part of the Laboratory for Sustainable Energy Carriers and Processes (LEP) in the Energy and Environment Division (ENE). The Ludwig group (GR-LUD) at EPFL is affiliated to the Environmental Engineering Institute (IIE) at the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC). The co-workers of the two units work closely together, however, whereas the work at PSI involves mainly inorganic materials (e.g. metals, rare earths, catalysts, sorption materials, nanomaterials, etc. ), at EPFL the focus is on biomass (e.g. algae, nutrients, etc. ).
