Research and Publications at EMF

At EMF - being a user lab of whole PSI - a huge variety of different sample materials is prepared, treated and investigated. This covers e.g. various types of metals (Photons for Engineering and Manufacturing (PEM) group, SYN division), catalysts, battery materials and fuel cells (ENE), protein molecules, cells and tissue (BIO), magnetic materials and in-house developed detectors (NUM and SYN) and last but not least - being unique in this respect in Switzerland - radioactive materials from nuclear power plants, CERN, the neutron spallation source at PSI or from hospitals in Switzerland. Main fields are preparation of samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or for investigations at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) with the focused ion beam (FIB), investigations of various solid materials by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy as well as the preparation and investigation of biological material under cryo conditions. More detailed information about the respective research can be found below.
