  • 1988 Degree in physical chemistry and solid state physics at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich, with thesis on 'Photoemission from ultrafine platinum and nickel particles in gas suspension'
  • 1992 PhD at ETH Zürich with laboratory work on photoemission from inorganic salt aerosol particles, development of a field sensor for detecting ultrafine aerosol particles in volcanic gases, field work on Mt.Etna, Volcano and Stromboli, Italy, and Kilauea, Hawaii.
