Computational Fluid Dynamics Group

Dr. Bojan Niceno and his research group have made significant contributions to the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), particularly in the areas of boiling heat transfer and urban fluid dynamics. Their extensive research encompasses various complex fluid phenomena, leading to several well-cited publications and advancements in CFD simulation methods.

One of the group’s notable research areas is the modeling of boiling using direct numerical simulation (DNS) and large eddy simulation (LES) techniques. The group's work demonstrated the development of a CFD method with interface tracking to understand boiling mechanisms in the annular flow regime. This research provided insights into the interaction between disturbance waves, mass transfer, and temperature distribution over the heat-transfer surface, validating the model against experimental data. Further advancing their contributions to CFD, they worked on the simulation of multiphase flows and the development of novel modeling techniques, covering a wide range of boiling regimes and demonstrating the capability of CFD models to predict boiling heat transfer across different regimes.

The group has also contributed to data-driven modeling approaches. They introduced a data-driven approach using deep feedforward neural networks to predict boiling heat transfer, showcasing the potential of machine learning in enhancing the accuracy of boiling simulations.

In the simulation of thermally driven flows, their research tested sub-grid scale models in a 3D cavity at high Rayleigh numbers. The study demonstrated that even with a coarse mesh, LES models could accurately predict flow fields and temperature distributions, providing a feasible modeling strategy for particulate flows in complex thermal environments.

Another significant study presented DNS of mixed convection turbulent heat transfer in a horizontal channel using liquid lead. This research analyzed the effects of buoyancy on turbulence and temperature distribution, highlighting the enhancement of turbulence with increasing buoyancy and the formation of large-scale structures in the temperature field.

In the area of urban fluid dynamics, the group applied advanced hybrid RANS-LES modeling paradigms. This research utilized the T-Flows CFD code, specifically optimized for high-quality unstructured meshing of urban terrains, demonstrating improved accuracy and credibility of predictions in complex urban scenarios. Closely connected with urban flow dynamics, they also made advancements in the reconstruction of Nusselt numbers in high Reynolds number flows. They proposed novel methods for improving the prediction of Nusselt numbers using wall function approaches in the RANS framework. These methods significantly improved the accuracy of heat transfer predictions in various benchmark cases. 

Dr. Niceno's ongoing dedication to improving physical models in CFD, along with his leadership in the development of T-Flows, an advanced CFD program, underscores his commitment to advancing computational methods in fluid dynamics. The group has consistently refined T-Flows, integrating GPU capabilities and working towards mixed GPU+MPI configurations to address complex flow simulations.
