Biography

Henrik Lemke works as a Free Electron Laser (FEL) instrument scientist since 2010 and leads the Bernina group within the Laboratory for Condensed Matter (LSC) at PSI which operates the Bernina instrument at SwissFEL since 2018. He received his physics diploma at the Christian Albrechts University Kiel studying biological materials using synchrotron radiation in 2005, and moved to ultrafast time-resolved x-ray diffraction studies during his PhD which he received from the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University in 2009. During a postdoc on the EU-project “Organic Nanomaterials for Electronics and Photonics” (ONE-P) he studied functional organic materials and moved to the first hard x-ray FEL Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the Stanford National Laboratory (SLAC) in 2010.  Here, he worked as instrument scientist at the x-ray pump/probe (XPP) instrument since 2011 implementing various first FEL-based hard x-ray experimental methods, especially x-ray spectroscopic and diffraction methods used in physical chemistry on charge transfer systems. He lead the instrument team and operation since 2012. In 2015, he joined the SwissFEL project at PSI, planning and constructing the Condensed matter physics instrument Bernina at the tender-to-hard x-ray branch ARAMIS.

Institutional Responsibilities

Lead of the  Bernina group and the Bernina instrument which specializes on condensed matter physics and material science  experiments performed at SwissFEL using tender-to-hard x-rays.

Scientific Research

Henrik Lemke seeks to improve the understanding in functional processes using ultrafast time resolved X-ray methods. Using the element specificity and high spatial resolution of X-rays at FEL-based femtosecond timescales allows to characterize the electronic and atomic structural configuration during the out-of-equilibrium changes of material properties, which provide new insights that may unravel their mechanisms.
