Biography
Michael Grimes is a postdoctoral researcher in the Magnetism and Microscopy Group at the Swiss Light Source. In 2018, he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Mod.) in Nanoscience, Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials at Trinity College Dublin in 2018. He was awarded his PhD from the Department of Computer Science, University of Manchester in 2022. In the course of his research on the ultrafast dynamics of the magnetic phase transition of FeRh, he was engaged in the Mesoscopic systems group at ETH Zürich/ Paul Scherrer Insitut from 2020 to 2021. Following his doctoral studies, he was appointed as a postdoctoral researcher at CEA-IRIG in Grenoble where he joined the ERC CARINE team. In the context of this project, he undertook a visiting scientist role at the ID01 beamline at ESRF, Grenoble with the objective of developing time-resolved in situ coherent diffraction imaging techniques for application to catalytic nanoparticles.
Scientific Research
Michael's research is centered on x-ray synchrotron and free-electron laser measurements of multiferroic materials, which possess the distinctive property of exhibiting both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric characteristics. His current project is aimed at understanding the interaction between electronic orbital, spin, and charge systems by driving these materials to non-equilibrium conditions. Through the use of ultrafast techniques such as femtosecond x-ray diffraction and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, the resulting changes in crystal and electronic structure provide insight into the couplings between these systems.
