Biography
Viktoria Hinger is a postdoctoral researcher in the Detector Group at the PSI Center for Photon Science. She earned her physics degree from the Vienna University of Technology, specializing in detector technologies and instrumentation for high-energy particle physics. Her master's thesis investigated the channel isolation in silicon strip sensors. Viktoria completed her PhD at the Vienna Institute of High Energy Physics as part of the CMS Collaboration, where she developed the silicon sensor process quality control procedure for the Phase 2 Upgrade of the CMS Outer Tracker and the High Granularity Calorimeter. She graduated in 2021, receiving the CMS Thesis Award for her work. Following her PhD, Viktoria transitioned from particle physics to photon science through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellowship at PSI. In her fourth year as a postdoc, she was awarded an SNSF Ambizione grant to support her research on developing a high-performance soft X-ray detector for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS).
Institutional Resonsibilities
For the charge-integrating JUNGFRAU detector, Viktoria supports in-house calibration and development as well as user experiments at Free Electron Laser and synchrotron facilities. She is the principal investigator of a research project aiming to develop a high-speed, large-area soft X-ray detector for RIXS based on the JUNGFRAU and MÖNCH readout chips.
Scientific Research
Viktoria's research focuses on optimizing charge-integrating hybrid pixel detectors to meet the demands of high-performance soft X-ray experiments. Techniques like Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) stand to benefit greatly from the high image rates and large active areas provided by detectors such as JUNGFRAU. To achieve this, Viktoria explores sensor and readout chip enhancements, including the integration of Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) sensors with internal signal amplification, specifically optimized for soft X-rays. Her work emphasizes the use of fine pixel pitches that enable position interpolation, targeting a spatial resolution on the micron scale. On the readout side, she focuses on developing a low-noise version of JUNGFRAU and explores the potential of the MÖNCH chip for RIXS applications at synchrotron facilities.
