Our mission

CNM is the organizational hub for research at PSI, focusing on the utilization of the PSI High Intensity Proton Accelerator (HIPA). Research activities span a wide spectrum from particle physics to solid, liquid, or soft condensed matter science, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and cultural heritage.

Among the current scientific challenges, our focus is on those aligned with PSI's mission, leveraging state-of-the-art instruments at our large-scale facilities: the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source SINQ, the Swiss Muon Source SµS, and the particle physics facilities CHRISP. The Center is structured into five research laboratories and a CNM staff group. For more information, please refer to this overview page.

CNM oversees the operation of SINQ and the Ultracold Neutron Source UCN, develops instrumentation at SINQ and SµS, and tests materials and target technologies for proton accelerator driven systems. Our facilities are accessible internationally, with 1700 annual visits through our user program, a cornerstone of the CNM activities. The PSI User Office handles the logistics for the numerous foreign visitors across all PSI facilities.
