PSI operates the nuclear facility Hotlab with and for the benefit of national and international research communities.
PSI strives to be a world leader in its research and in supporting the external users of its research facilities. In this ambitious environment, safety and health protection have the highest priority.
Accordingly, the institute management of PSI ensures a high standard of safety in the research environment for the benefit of its employees, users and the environment and promotes a conscious safety culture.
For the nuclear facility Hotlab, this means in particular:

This includes the implementation of the relevant and applicable requirements from laws, ordinances and technical regulations.
- The management of the facility, executives and project managers take their responsibility seriously and create favourable conditions for safety in the Hotlab with a suitable organisational structure. They are aware of their role model function.
- In addition to conventional safety in the workplace and employee health protection, safety in the Hotlab also includes nuclear safety, security and IT security.
- Employees at all levels promote the safety culture through a proactively critical attitude and a consistent and prudent approach.
- Continuous improvements in plant and operational safety are deliberately promoted through the open exchange of information and professional documentation.
- The effectiveness of measures taken, particularly after security-related incidents, is reviewed.
- Hazard identification and risk assessment in the form of safety analyses are an integral part of breaking new ground in science and research.
- The training and further education of Hotlab employees in all areas of safety is a top priority.
