Biography

Serhane Zerdane is a laser scientist in the Pump Laser Group within the Laboratory of Non-linear Optics at PSI since September 2021. He received his Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Rennes 1 in France in 2014. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the Institute of Physics of Rennes (IPR) under the supervision of Prof. Eric Collet and Dr. Marco Cammarata on studying the ultrafast dynamics in spin-crossover molecular materials using femtosecond optical and X-ray spectroscopies. After his Ph.D. in 2017, he joined the Bernina group in SwissFEL at PSI as a postdoctoral researcher until October 2020. He then moved to the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in France for a postdoc at the ID09 beamline until August 2021.

Institutional Responsibilities

Serhane is responsible for providing the required optical laser to the Bernina endstation for in-house and user experiments, combined with X-rays generated from the SwissFEL Free Electron Laser to perform ultrafast experiments on solid and liquid state materials. This includes operating and maintaining advanced laser systems that generate ultrafast pulses from UV to THz. He also contributes to the development of new diagnostic laser systems and works as a delegate in the laser lab SLAB, where different types of optical pump-probe experiments can be performed using a wide wavelength range from visible to mid-infrared.

Scientific Research

Serhane Zerdane’s scientific research focuses on using optical short pulses and X-rays to study the ultrafast changes of the physical properties in solid-state materials. In his current research project, Serhane utilizes NIR to THz excitation to manipulate the electronic and structural properties of strongly correlated materials.
