SPEED2ZERO is a multidisciplinary joint initiative co-financed by the ETH board dedicated to advancing Switzerland's transition to a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) future while promoting biodiversity conservation. Through cutting-edge scientific research and proactive stakeholder collaboration, the project develops actionable strategies, and innovative tools to support the nation’s sustainable transformation toward renewable energy.
The project tackles mainly these two pivotal questions: 1) what strategies, technologies, policies, and financial instruments are needed to reduce domestic GHG emissions by at least 50% compared to 1990 levels by 2030? and 2) how can Switzerland achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 while enhancing biodiversity, ensuring economic resilience, and fostering societal well-being?
At its core, SPEED2ZERO empowers decision-makers and policymakers by equipping them with tailored scenarios, strategic action plans, and a comprehensive toolbox designed to achieve Switzerland’s ambitious energy, climate, and biodiversity targets for 2030–2050.
In this project, PSI’s Technology Assessment Group contributes primarily by offering assessments and comprehensive data on the environmental life-cycle impacts of both current and emerging technologies, which could provide essential insights to guide decision-making and promote environmentally responsible policies for the future Swiss energy system.
