NEPHEWS

The EC support program NEPHEWS aims to provide researchers with access to Europe's leading open advanced neutron (N), synchrotron (SR), and free-electron laser (FEL) research infrastructures (RI). This initiative promotes excellence in curiosity-driven research.

In NEPHEWS, the research institute adopts a novel approach by collaborating with their extensive user base of over 40,000 scientists through Users Organizations. This initiative aims to establish a user-driven access program specifically targeting new and non-expert communities, with a priority focus on expanding access to countries like Ukraine and across Africa. The initiative embraces a bottom-up, User-to-User-oriented strategy to foster an integrated European research infrastructure landscape, involving the LEAPS and LENS consortia alongside their respective scientific communities.

At PSI the beamlines at SINQ participate in the program.

PSI is partner within the NEPHEWS Twinning Programme. The primary objective of twinning within NEPHEWS is to facilitate the transfer of essential knowledge, encompassing organizational and technical skills, from experienced research groups to new users entering the research infrastructure (RI) environment.

In the NEPHEWS Twinning Programme, experienced user groups volunteer to host "novice users" (NU) during their experiments. The selection of NU is guided by shared scientific interests, ensuring that they receive tailored, hands-on experience. This initiative aims to support NU in developing their own scientific programs utilizing NEPHEWS facilities and preparing subsequent scientific proposals. Ideally, twinning campaigns initiate long-term collaborations.

This kind of arrangement benefits both parties: less experienced users gain proficiency in RI techniques, while experienced groups receive additional support for experiments and fresh scientific insights from groups engaged in related research areas.
