The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

The Advanced Nuclear Systems Group at PSI is looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow for Modeling of Gen-IV European Sodium Fast Reactor

Your tasks

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to contribute to the modeling of the European Sodium Fast Reactor (ESFR), a 3600 MWt Generation-IV nuclear reactor developed over the past three decades through a series of Euratom collaborative projects.

As part of the ongoing ESFR-SIMPLE project (2022–2026), your research will focus on modeling neutronic and material behavior under both steady-state and transient conditions for two ESFR designs:
  • 360 MWt MOX-fueled ESFR-SMR
  • 3600 MWt U-10Zr-fueled ESFR-M
This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge nuclear reactor technology, contributing to the advancement of next-generation fast reactors.

Your profile

  • PhD degree in Nuclear Engineering or Physics
  • Strong background in reactor physics and fast reactor technology
  • Proficiency in using neutronic simulation tools (e.g., Serpent)
  • Familiarity with materials modeling and thermomechanical behavior of nuclear fuels is an advantage
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative research environment
  • Strong scientific communication skills, including publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at conferences

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
