ESA Opens Innovation Center in Switzerland

The European Space Agency (ESA) is launching the "European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre" (ESDI) in collaboration with PSI, located in Park Innovaare.

The ESDI aims to strengthen collaboration with Swiss innovation actors and promote the development of technologies in quantum research, data science, and material science. Jennifer Wadsworth, head of the Phi-Lab at PSI, explains that the Phi-Lab will initiate research programs to financially support innovative projects, with the first program starting in 2025.

Johann Richard, head of the ESDI, emphasizes the importance of ESDI as the only permanent ESA presence in Switzerland, designed to foster exchanges between international organizations and the Swiss high-tech industry. The focus will be on disruptive, interdisciplinary innovations that go beyond incremental improvements.

The ESDI is funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SBFI) and will receive support from the ETH Domain starting in 2025. The opening ceremony is scheduled for spring 2025 and will mark the beginning of a deeper collaboration between the ESA and Switzerland.
