Skills shortage: New perspectives for young researchers in industry

Employers complain about a shortage of skilled workers, while young researchers often do not know exactly where to look for their next professional challenge. Strengthening the bridge between academia and industry at PSI can help open up new perspectives for both sides.

Link between academia and industry

Every year, promising talented researchers leave PSI after completing their doctorate or post-doc to use their acquired knowledge and skills to the benefit of industry and to take on new roles there as specialists or managers. This "knowledge transfer" is supported by the PSI-internal Career Center as well as the Technology Transfer Team. As the largest and one of the first research institutions in Switzerland, PSI relies on a central point of contact to explicitly advise doctoral students and postdocs on their career issues and development. This target group differs from Bachelor and Master graduates not only in their in-depth research knowledge and specialist skills, but also in their professional experience. As a result, they have great potential for careers as subject experts outside academia as well. The PSI Career Center specifically helps doctoral students and postdocs prepare for their future careers and for their entry into the industrial environment.

Expanding the existing network

The PSI Career Center already works with many companies and would like to expand this network function between PSI and industry even further in the future. Our goal is to provide a platform to enable PSI's talented scientists to get in touch with suitable companies - and vice versa.
