The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

Your tasks

  • Explore the performance limits of integrated photonics devices using trapped ions as quantum sensors
  • Operate a complex ion trapping experiment based on the QCCD architecture
  • Conceive new active and passive photonic devices and other technologies essential to scaling ion trap quantum systems and realize them with external foundries
  • Develop protocols for quantum computing and sensing experiments

Your profile

  • PhD degree, ideally in experimental ion trapping or neutral atom optical tweezers
  • You have published relevant publications in the field
  • You have demonstrated the ability to operate complex quantum physics experiments
  • You are highly motivated to advance quantum science and technology
  • You have hands-on experience in some of the following subjects: optics and lasers, atomic physics, cryogenics and ultra-high vacuum technology, real-time computer control for quantum experiments, and integrated photonics
  • You are experienced in data analysis and excellent documentation of their work
  • You display a strong team spirit
  • You enjoy working with and co-supervising students
