11 February: International Day of Women and Girls in Science - Encouraging equal opportunities in research

On February 11, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This initiative, launched by UNESCO, aims to highlight the important role of women in science and to encourage girls to pursue a career in science.

Particularly in the STEM fields, which are essential for solving current social challenges, it is important to reduce the currently still high gender gap (cf. UNESCO-Institute for Statistics).

At PSI, together with other institutions in the ETH domain, we are actively working to increase the number of female scientists through programmes such as "Fix-the-leaky Pipeline", "CONNECT" and "feM-LEAD", as well as measures such as the newly launched PSI Family Flexibility Grant.

To celebrate this day, we are passing the word on to three female scientists at PSI who allow us an insight into their scientific careers, work and motivation.
