The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For Applied Catalysis and Spectroscopy group we are looking for a

PhD Student in transient operando spectroscopy of supported metal catalysts

Your tasks

  • You will work on the preparation and advanced characterization of supported noble metal catalysts for liquid phase hydrogenation reactions
  • You will design and carry out in situ/operando ATR-IR, XAS and XRD/PDF experiments, thus including experiments at synchrotron facilities
  • You will use modulated excitation systematically to enhance the output of spectroscopic experiments
  • You will contribute to build and use a setup to combine ATR-IR with online analytics
  • You will analyze and interpret the spectroscopic data with the aim of advancing the understanding of reaction mechanisms
  • You will disseminate your results in form of publications and presentations at national and international conferences

Your profile

  • You have a master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or material science
  • You have acquired first experience in in situ/operando characterization of materials, catalysis and/or material synthesis
  • Very good command of written and spoken English is a must
  • Basic knowledge of Python, MatLab and/or analogous softwares is advantageous
  • You will be enrolled as PhD student in the doctoral program of EPFL, from which you will receive the PhD title
